What is the CFSC?

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course provides basic firearms training to Canadians who wish to obtain a firearms license to possess or acquire non-restricted firearms. After completion of the course, a written test is administered. All Canadians who wish to obtain a firearms license must pass the CFSC test. Visit the Canada Firearms Centre to learn more:

What topics will the Canadian Firearms Safety Course cover?

The course covers all material required by the Firearms Education Service of Ontario and the Canadian Firearms Center. Topics include the evolution of firearms, major parts, safety, ammunition, operation, transportation, and storage.

I am under 18 years old. Do I need to take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and Exam?

Yes. A Possession and Acquisition license is only issued to those persons 18 years of age and older. Under the age of 18 a person will require a Minor's Permit to possess and use a firearm while under adult supervision. A person under 18 will have to take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and pass the exam to apply for the minor's permit.

What is the CRFSC?

The Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course is an additional course for those who wish to possess and/or acquire restricted firearms. You must first pass the CFSC test in order to take the CRFSC test.

 

What are the costs for the courses and exams?

We charge $125.00 for the Canadian Firearms Safety Course including the exam. There is also a $5.00 cost for individuals who wish to purchase the student manual from us and who is registered for the course.

We charge $80.00 for the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course including the exam. There is also a $15.00 cost for individuals who wish to purchase the student manual from us.

We charge $125.00 for the Ontario Hunter Education Course including the exam and student manual for the course.

(The above fees are reduced by the $25.00 deposit charged to register making them $100.00, $55.00 and $100.00 respectively.)

How do I register for a course?

To take any of these courses the person must register prior to the course. To register the person must contact Mr. Bill Rudderham of the Avonmore Training Facility at 613-346-1289 and supply a deposit of $25.00 along with their name and phone number. This $25.00 deposit can be cash, Visa or Mastercard. Once the deposit is received the person is placed on the class list for the course date they have selected.

Note: Be sure that you want the course and the date you have chosen. Once the deposit has been paid and the course date selected there will be NO refund of the deposit. 

The remainder of the course fee is payable by cash, Visa or Mastercard on the first day of the course.

 

What is the FSESO?

The Firearm Safety Education Service of Ontario is an association of instructors in Ontario who are certified by the Chief Provincial Firearms Office to teach the Canadian Firearm Safety Course. All CFSC instructors in Ontario must be certified by the FSESO. You may wish to visit their website to learn more:

Is a Hunter Education Course in Ontario the same as the Canadian Firearms Safety Course?

No. The Ontario Hunter Education Course is a provincial course which a person must take and then pass the written and practical examination to be eligible to obtain an Ontario Outdoors Card. The Ontario Outdoors Card allows a person to purchase a resident hunting license in Ontario. 

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course is a federal course. You must pass the CFSC test to be able to obtain a Possession and Acquisition license for non-restricted firearms.

Do I need the to take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and pass the exam to hunt in Ontario?

No. A person can hunt in Ontario, for certain wildlife, without a valid Firearms License for the person  however only with archery equipment during the respective archery season. The Firearms License is required for the possession of firearms used while hunting.

Can I take the test without taking the course?

Yes. The test may be taken without taking the CFSC course. Keep in mind that the test is challenging, and you are encouraged to take the course.

 

Can I take the CFSC course elsewhere?
